1,300 football gamblers arrested; none in Thailand

Singapore (dpa) - An Interpol coordinated operation tackling illegal football gambling in Asia netted more than 1,300 people across the region, news reports said Friday. Police forces from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia and Malaysia participated, The Straits Times said. A total of US$16.8 million was seized, and betting records worth US$1.45 billion were disrupted.
Dubbed Operation Soga Wave II, it was timed to coincide with the Euro 2008 soccer championships and the final matches of major soccer leagues around the world, an Interpol statement said. Some 1,088 illegal gambling dens, many of which were controlled by organised crime gangs, were raided in the two-month operation.
It was the second time Operation Soga, short for soccer gambling, was held. The first was conducted in October and November 2007. Among those nabbed were 52 people in Singapore for bets amounting to 600,000 Singapore dollars (US$413,000). About 116,000 Singapore dollars (US$80,000) in cash was seized. Jul 11, 2008 BANGKOK POST

Thaksin Shinawatra is planning large-scale investments in Cambodia with Koh Kong province serving only as his first step in his business ventures in the country, Cambodian Defence Minister Gen Teah Banh said yesterday. Lauding Mr Thaksin as ''a capable person with a sharp vision'', the general said Mr Thaksin would not only lead foreign businessmen to invest in Koh Kong, but they would also take part in tourism and energy ventures both inland and in maritime areas. ''We welcome all investors who will help develop Cambodia,'' Gen Teah Banh said. Koh Kong, which is opposite Trat, has been eyed by Mr Thaksin as a prime location for his casino and entertainment complex development. According to former deputy army chief Gen Vichit Yathip, Mr Thaksin would co-invest in the project with businessmen from the Middle East. A prospective investor would be Harrods owner Mohamed al-Fayed, he said.

Both Gen Vichit and Gen Teah Banh denied any link between Koh Kong and other development projects initiated by Mr Thaksin and Phnom Penh's move to nominate the Preah Vihear temple as a new World Heritage site. Besides the Koh Kong project, according to Gen Teah Banh, Mr Thaksin plans to develop new tourist attractions in Phnom Penh and other major cities. He also wants to work with Cambodia to make use of natural gas deposits in the overlapping maritime area between Thailand and Cambodia. The general admitted Mr Thaksin wanted to invest in joint natural gas development, but said that the project required further talks.''I insist we've never talked about a trade-off between Preah Vihear and natural gas with Mr Thaksin,'' Gen Teah Banh said. ''How could we make such an agreement?''Gen Teah Banh, also deputy prime minister, said the Preah Vihear issue has been used as a political tool to attack both the Thai and Cambodian governments. In Phnom Penh, he said, his government is also under heavy criticism by the opposition ahead of the general election on July 27.

10 gambling arrests made in first 3 days of Euro 2008

Punters and bookies prefer anonymity of phone and internet

The commander of Chiang Mai Municipal Police has summarized ten gambling-related arrests during the first three days of the Euro 2008 Championships. All local and city police stations have been ordered to carry out suppression activities, however difficult, and special investigative teams have been set up. Due to the preference of both bookmakers and gamblers for the anonymity of internet and telephone betting, dedicated internet and telephone gambling suppression activities have also been initiated.
According to Pol. Maj. Gen. Suthep Daecharaksa, of the ten arrests made during the first three days of the tournament, one was of a bookmaker’s runner, and the rest were of gamblers. Evidence was seized, including an amount of 8,000 baht in cash. The arrests took place in Mae Ping, Chiang Mai City and Chang Phuok.

Tanatorn Champathong has been arrested and charged with being an illegal banker for European football gambling.

Police on a crackdown on illegal gambling during the Euro 2008 football series have arrested a man discovered running a gambling book. Officers raided a grocery shop in South Pattaya just after midnight on June 12, where they found 38-year-old Tanatorn Champathong busy on a computer.
